‘Forms of Remembering and Forgetting’

Our reading group on Thursday 30 January 2025 focused on ‘Introduction: Forms of Remembering and Forgetting in Early Modern England and on the Shakespearean Stage’ from The Drama of Memory in Shakespeare’s History Plays by Isabel Karremann (2015), chosen by Allison Lemley.

Allison prepared the following prompts:

  • How does Karremann define the forms of remembering and forgetting? What are the effects of this onstage?
  • What examples might fit within the framework from history plays?
  • In what ways can you imagine this working in performance? How could physical space be a factor in remembering or forgetting?
  • How might this framework apply beyond the history play?
